It’s a disturbing story to see how athletes, especially starting from a young high school age, get treated and pampered which feeds their already corrupt egos. These young athletes are developing such a false and limiting sense of entitlement. It’s easy to fall into this trap. Many are growing up through violence, drugs, reckless sex, and with parents absent from their lives. No guidance. No training in the game of life.
Unfortunately life skills are not taught in schools. You have to go out and get life skills for yourself. With all the coaches, agents, and media pumping athletes egos, no wonder most athletes after their athletic careers are suffering from depression, pain pills, divorce, bankruptcy, and suicide.
They are not aware of how to manage themselves. They have lost control of the one thing they have possession of…their MIND. Coaches, agents, and teammates are misleading athletes into living a life that does not exist outside of sports. Athletes feel that people are going to give them special treatment because of their name.
I was with a former NBA star, name I will not mention, at a local pub. He mentioned his name at least five times. Most people there had no idea who he was. However, when it was time to pay for an $8 cigar, he started to walk out of the place stating his name again, expecting the tab to be taken care of.
This is one example of many.
There is also the problem with athletes not making the distinction of people who are FOR them vs. people who are WITH them. A lot of these athletes are holding on, or hanging with people who are just with them when times are good. The contract is big. The money is rolling in. The perks. Athletes must learn to open the door for people who are FOR them and let go of the people who are just WITH them. People FOR you are FOR you no matter what. Good and Bad times.
We can go on and on revealing more problems. However, the key to all of this is helping athletes learn from a young age how to develop the right thinking habits. With so many false and limiting beliefs planted into their minds from such a young age, how can we possibly think there will be better results?
Athletes must start creating the Mental Strength & Conditioning and Life Skills essential for success as early as possible. They must learn to stop relying solely on outside influence to control their thinking, and start becoming aware of their intellectual mind. Through this process, athletes will experience peace of mind, happiness, and lasting fulfillment. NOT the chaos, suffering, and pain they are experiencing currently.
There IS something that can be done. We must do our part in making them aware of their true potential.
